Compressor noise reduction solution

August 7, 2023

Complaints of noisy compressors coupled with the growing need to increase capacity, posed a problem for GBR Rail Freights' engineering shed.

Freight train engineering workshop needed a quieter compressor solution with increased capacity.

When GBR Rail Freight decided to re-open the March Up Yard rail sidings complex in Cambridgeshire, much of the former brownfield site had been developed with residential housing. The long-disused March Up Yard rail sidings complex had seen the site reduced to just over three acres in size, but it could still accommodate trains of up to 320m in length. This was perfect, as the line through March is part of the nationally designated freight route between Felixstowe and Nuneaton, and plays a key role in the haulage of goods and materials around the country. The site was initially used for the stabling and maintenance of rolling stock used on the traffic between Middleton Towers and Yorkshire, the Peak District and East Anglia.

As with many brownfield sites, housing development places added pressures on businesses.

Although the redevelopment scheme incorporated new fencing and acoustic barriers to mitigate the impact of the yard’s re-opening on nearby residents, the sites growth in the subsequent years saw increasing noise complaints.  As rail traffic to and from Felixstowe continued to grow, the yards engineering workshop needed to increase capacity. With residents’ complaints on noise levels coupled with the need to increase compressed air capacity, this posed a challenge! Working closely with Cambs Compressors, their FMC wanted a cost-effective solution which addressed both the need for increased air capacity, and was significantly quieter.

A new 'super quiet' compressor installation was the answer

"In addition to being the solution to increase capacity and reduce noise, the Boge 7.5kw eco line supplied, installed and commissioned with a 2 year on-site support warranty – also proved to be very energy efficient. It solved the growth challenges posed, and provided our residential neighbours the quieter solution they had been pressing for."
